Homer has exhibited signs of dementia since I met him… Being an alcoholic, helped mask a great many of the signs, if you were not aware…
I watched my dad from around the age of 8 after a traumatic brain injury drove him into dementia and sundowners and I watched my mother manipulate him during his last 30 years on earth…
The biggest problem with any neurological disease is owning your behavior and when it’s neurologic, some say that is easier said than done and then you have someone like me that says, “yes you can control the progress of neurological decline”, it’s been shown that you can slow it down, not stop… Slow it down…
By slowing it down, you give the person a chance to participate in life a little longer and just maybe a heart attack or going to sleep one night and that’s the end…
Many hope for that as they progress down this dark road…
With Homer, I have been on him since we started working together flipping houses and I can attest, for at least 30 years of that, denial and owning his life was a real problem…
He quit drinking in 01 and has been sober ever since, but, he will make excuses for what ever screw up it is, if his brain is in dementia mode and that was my first clue back in 96…
Like with my dad, Homer was showing the signs, but no tests showed I was right, until last summer and a PET scan showed deposits and it showed up in his blood…
I was right, as usual…
So, my trying to get through to Homer for 30 years….
“You have to own your life, you have to own your choices, your actions and your words”!!!
Excuses are like assholes, we all have one… Just saying…
So with Homer, my frustration is showing …. and when they get to this stage, you have to step back and make different choices and you realize, you are in charge, you are the decision maker and you are the one making all the choices, good or bad…
Homer’s disease is showing some antagonism and I am concerned he may become agitated… Violence is the one thing, I can’t deal with anymore, I shouldn’t ever have too…
So, I will not have Homer help me with much of anything around the property, vehicles or 5th wheel…
I am on my own and if I own it…
Then Homer, he’s just got to own getting up and being Homer… and sometimes as the caregiver you have to step back and realize, they are just as frustrated and missing themselves as much as you miss them…
It is a disease that takes from everyone involved…
I remember…
